today on the shocking resignation of cia director david petraeus. we have now learned the fbi opened an investigation into his biographer, paula broadwell, for allegedly accessing petraeus' e-mails. all this just a week before the general was set to testify before congress on the benghazi attack. joining me now is greg miller, national security correspondent for "the washington post." greg, what a morning. let's get right to it. i'd like to hear the latest that you've learned. >> well, you know, the big question now is what is the reason for this fbi investigation into this e-mail? and it does look like this is an access to a personal e-mail account. so, this is not a case, as it initially appeared yesterday, of david petraeus coming forward to clear a guilty conscience or something. this is a case where he was flushed out in the open by an fbi investigation that had to do with security. >> okay. now, nbc news has not yet been able to reach paula broadwell for comment, so we haven't confirmed that she is, quote, the woman, but we do know the fbi's investigating her for possibly acces

of the extramarital affair he revealed in resigning from his post, a decision that came under the pressure from an f.b.i. investigation that threatened to make things even uglier, according to an intelligence community source who spoke to politico on the condition of anonymity. so tell us a little bit more, josh gerstein of the politico, tell us about this investigation by the f.b.i. and what's been the fallout so far in washington about the announcement that the general was going to resign from the c.i.a. guest: well, we still don't know too much of the detail about what was going on with the f.b.i. there are a lot of reports out there, and, in fact, it is true that part of this investigation by the f.b.i. had to do with the question of whether somebody was improperly accessing petraeus' personal email accounts. you know, however, the sources that we spoke to said that wasn't really the entirety of the investigation or the thing that really got it rolling. but at some point, for whatever reason, the f.b.i. became concerned that somebody was getting into his account. now, you can see a variety of reason

enforcement sources and law enforcement officials that the fbi is now investigating, and this is an ongoing investigation, into paula broadwell. she is someone who has had close access to general petraeus. she was his biographer and wrote a book on general petraeus called "all in." she's spent extensive time with him in afghanistan, has made numerous television appearances talking about general petraeus. says she's gone running with him. the fbi investigation is seeing whether she had improper access to the general -- to general petraeus' e-mails and may have had access to his -- may have accidentally or deliberately had access to classified information, and so we know this investigation is taking place and that it's identified paula broadwell, someone who has been close to david petraeus, which many people are saying could be an indication of the timing of all of this. >> okay. david ignatius, you're excellent at covering all this spy agencies. what's going on? >> well, i think richard mentioned the fbi investigation of paula broadwell. paula broadwell is general petraeus' biographer and s
